Clark Family Reunion 2010

Hi Clarks...
As the official planning committee for the 2010 family reunion, Betty Jean, Karen, and Paula have been gathering feedback on the venue for next summer's reunion. Tommy and Linda did an outstanding job selecting Buzzard Rock for the last reunion and it had lots to recommend it: location, on site bar and karaoke, affordable cabins/rooms, boat launch. Still, some thought the service was surly and the food at the restaurant horrible. With this in mind, we thought we'd throw out the feelers via this blog and get some feedback on three possible venues - including Buzzard Rock again.

Please respond ASAP (by August 25th) so we can reserve space for all of us at one of the following locations:

Lake Barkley Resort: parks.ky.gov/findparks/resortparks/lb/

Giant City Lodge (Makanda, IL): giantcitylodge.com/

Buzzard Rock: www.buzzardrock.com/

All are equal-distance from Paducah; the Illinois location is closer to Cape Girardo or St. Louis airports - obviously, than it is to Nashville. Transportation cost/ease will be a big factor I'm sure. Giant City, Illinois is near wineries and is in the Shawnee Nat'l Forest, it is cheaper than the other two, and they have national forest hiking trails - but no boat access. Rooms have frigs but no kitchens (nor does Barkley). The lodge food looks like a highlight and is not too expensive.

Betty Jean and Dick did some research into Lake Barkley so I'll let them post their impressions. Natch, everyone can check out the websites and investigate themselves. We all know Buzzard Rock and while there was some dissatisfaction, it served us fairly well. As they say, the devil you know may be better than the devil you don't know.

QUESTION: What does anybody think about a talent/no talent sort of gathering? It might just be a hoot and begin a new tradition. Please weigh in on this and/or any other ideas you may have.

Signing off for now but will add more later.. Paula Wynn

  1. Hello. I am sneaking in my opinion just under the line. Whew! There's so much that goes into planning a reunion, let me just touch on a few things.

    1. I really enjoyed Buzzard Rock last year and I would be happy to go there again. I am also happy to go to another place.

    2. As a planner of reunions, please check into the liquor laws at the location you are having it. We have run into all sorts of problems, from the bar closing early to a contractual agreement that you purchase all liquor from the resort. (What a scam!) Please be sure you ask a zillion liquor questions. We all know our family will want to relax with a drink or two.

    3. I really liked the idea of cooking out (grilling) as opposed to a restaurant. It was less expensive and my sister Greta realized that she actually does like ham. (Ham, who knew?) It was more casual and I felt that more people mixed and mingled within the age groups.

    4. Whatever we do, wherever we stay, people will have as much fun as they want to have. Relax. It's one weekend out of the year where we get to all see each other.

    5. I'm not really interested in participating in a talent/no talent show. I think I'm more of an audience member. I really like chatting with everyone and playing it by ear, as opposed to scheduled events.

Take care and thank you for all your hard work.

  2. i vote illinois! our state is broke and we could use the tourism dollars. also we have relaxed liquor laws. it will be kinda cool to have a 5th state for our family reunions (wisco, ky, florida, missouri). also buzzard rock left a sour taste in my mouth. on top of the surly service im pretty sure one of their guys stole my camera.
